Australia Post Packaging Requirements: A Quick Guide

When sending parcels through Australia Post, adhering to their packaging guidelines ensures safe and efficient delivery. Naturally, this means that there are a lot of stipulations in place for what can and cannot be pushed through the Australia Post system, and that does include requirements when it comes to your packaging.

Whether you're a business owner crafting a memorable unboxing experience or an individual sending a personal package, understanding and fully complying with these requirements is an essential part of making sure that your package gets where you need it to in one piece.

At EB Packaging, we want to ensure that your packaging and shipping experience is the best it can be. This quick guide to the Australia Post system outlines Australia Post’s key packaging and packing guidelines, drawing directly from their website.

Using Your Own Packaging

As you would know, Australia Post allows customers to use their own packaging, provided it meets specific guidelines to ensure safe transit through their network. According to Australia Post:

“You can use your own packaging when sending through Australia Post, as long as you follow our packaging guidelines”.

When attempting to adhere to said guidelines, there are some things to consider:

Size and Weight Limits

Parcels must not exceed 105cm in length or 0.25 cubic metres in volume for domestic deliveries, with a maximum weight of 22kg. For international parcels, the maximum weight is 20kg, and the maximum girth (length + width + height) is 140cm. Oversized parcels may incur additional fees, such as an Over Maximum Limits Fee of $100.00 (GST inclusive) if they enter the delivery network.

Packaging Material

Opt for matte packaging in bright or light colours as, according to Australia Post, “sorting machines can find shiny or dark packaging hard to read”. Avoid glossy or slippery materials, as these can slip off conveyor belts. Labels should be printed in black ink on matte white paper, with clear, visible barcodes, and placed centrally on a flat surface without overfilling satchels.

Durability and Security

Packaging must be durable and secured with heavy-duty packing tape. Australia Post advises that items should fit well within the packaging—neither too loose nor overly tight. For items prone to bending, such as documents or artwork, use rigid mailers or thick cardboard for added protection. Avoid using ribbon, string, or rope on the outside of packages, as these can get caught in sorting machines and cause damage.

Branding Opportunities

Businesses can enhance customer experience by incorporating branded elements like stickers, tissue paper, or handwritten notes. Eco-friendly fillers, such as crinkle paper or moulded pulp, can also add a sustainable touch while securing items.
